Incorrect shadows

Post by phile_forum »

Got a problem here. Take a look at the attached image. See how the wall below the 'stairs' is just as bright as above them? Shouldn't it be in shadow?

There is only one light source, in the room beyond the door at the top of the stairs. Everything is welded up - the 'stairs' are even welded into the walls. The area under the stairs should only be lit by a very small amount of bounced light and yet it's as bright as the area that is being lit directly by light coming through the doorway.

All the render settings are on Medium. Latest Kray public beta (OB2 I think).

Any suggestions as to what's going on?

Phil

Never mind. I fixed it - although it seems a bit odd to me. The room with the light in it was composed of inward-facing polys only. When I 'thickened' these to give the walls an outer face, the area under the stairs went dark. This is odd because this basement area had proper two-sided walls all along which I was expecting to keep stray light out.

Kray can do Double sided poly's, a wall thickness should not be required?!?

Turning on 'Double Sided' in the surface editor for the walls, ceiling and floor of the small room does not cure the problem though. Looks like it can only be done using geometry.

What bothers me is that I don't understand how the light is getting into the main space under the stairs at all.

EDIT: Sorry, I made a mistake. Double Sided DOES cure the problem. Still doesn't explain how the light gets in there in the first place though.

Result with Double Sided switched on (+sharpening and a bit of colour correction):
