All kind tone maps are good when they give us good result
Imho, the best tone map is only gamma mixed with Exponential without LWF
Here my setting:

Then more gamma (first tone map) then less contrast, Gamma 1.0 means Linear.
Exponential give a bit control over too bright surfaces. I think blending 50% is optimal.
Under 50% Exponential is too strong and has too big influence over colours and light.
This tone map give renders a bit "gamma looking" but result is perfect for next step: post process.
