IES lights overblown

Post by thomas »

Hi!

Another day, another question of mine - just learning Kray :) .

1) I want to include IES-lights in a scene but in all my setups ( not only this specific scene ) my IES lights are completely overblown. I don't know if there a whole lot to do about this because as I understand it IES lights are just correct the way they are and all you can do is change exposure or use another IES profile.

2) What does the size of a light do with IES lights in LightWave native renderer? I've noticed that this changes something about the sharpness of the light-web. Does this do something in Kray as well or not?

3) If I'm not mistaken there is only two things you can adjust for using Kray with IES-lights: the IES profile used and the light intensity, right?

p.s. I would love to show you some of my work instead of only asking questions, but since this is under non-disclosure it's impossible for me!

Thanks!

It's just like with any other light - if intensity is high and light close to the wall then that part will get overexposed. The issue with IES lights is more pronounced because those lights have a very focused area of where the light is emitted to. You can overcome this problem somewhat by using light power multiplier.

I'm not sure what size you mean.

Yes that is correct.

Hi Jure,

Thanks for the answers, fast as always! What I meant with the size parameter of IES lights was that in the LightWave Renderer ( not in Kray ) IES lights render differently when you change the SIZE parameter ( not in the Lights properties, but just in Lay-Out like the move and rotate parameters ). The IES light web becomes blurrier when you make the lights bigger - the intensity and distance stay the same. I wondered if this played a role in Kray renders as well.

thanks!

If it works in LW then I think it should in Kray too. But honestly I never tried that because I didn't know about this behavior.
