Help to improve

Post by ladeira3d »

Hi guys

Here in this country almost everyone uses vray, my clients are always comparing the quality and my work is never good enough.
I was half way to change to vray, but with kray i decided to give one more chance, i love lightwave workflow and i´ve seen very good images in this forum.
I´ve read almost all topics and they helped a lot, but now i don´t know what to do more.

Here are some of my work, please tell me what can i do to get a litlle more reality and less "plastic" look.

Thanks

Everything is just too flat. Your light is not bouncing enough. Light must bounce, create color radiation on surfaces and shadows. Your surfaces need alot of work too. Can you send your lws file so we can check how you setup your lights and kray?

btw.
for interiors You need area lights in windows (forget about good light inside without this.... fill light from outside: sunsky, lumi, ball, SUN is not enough becouse when You increse Sun and fill light You will recive overbright windows Area)
For me the best for interiors in this point are:
1/Lumi ball with sunsky + Sun (lumi ball 100 m, 200-300% lumi, Sun beige colour with POWER 3-6)
2/Area light before windows (!) No OUTSIDE! (POWER 3-5 not much becouse we don`t have yet correction for POWER in reflection surfaces, Inv. Dist2 5m, colour sof beige or white, size ~60-70% of windows size)
3/MINIMUM 20 bounce light (this is very important) recurse 20; and: postprocess desaturate, 0.2 (for small desaturate) You have all in choice menu...
4/I prefer Exponential 2.2 (I know this a bit destroy real texture colours but make nice contrast)
5/background image MUST HAVE: uncheck all shadows and check UNSEEN BY RADIOSITY and RAYTRACING (I know after that we dont`t see reflection from background image, but we see nice blue colour from sunsky and background don`t blocked light from sunsky) Ideal is make 3D background :)
6/good idea....

I took a look at your scene.... Here are my suggestions:

- get rid of hidden area lights on the ceiling - use lumi polygons
- turn luminosity model to indirect
- increase sun intensity
- add area lights in windows
- switch to exponential to get better contrast
- adjust qucik LWF for exponential (lower gamma)
- remove kray indirect rays shader (u need to see color bouncing)
- remove SG_CCtools (u don't need this)
- decrease diffuse on textures (max 80-90%)

this is what i get after couple of changes... Tweak it more from here to your liking....

Yes this is basic setup for exterior that works fine. Maybe you want to replace sunsky with 360°photo or HDRI though...

That make-over was INCREDIBLE! Really gets me going to get me on the knees to beg clients to pay up asap so I can get my hands on Kray.

i cant understand the setting for qucik LWF plugin and their relationship with the tonemap value in the kray general render option panel
i mean .. should the value be the same as in lwf plugin panel?
how do they work ?...

Yes you should keep them the same in most cases. However you can raise or lower the values if you want to get different result... Exponential mode in Kray GUI usualy makes too much contrast when used with QLWF gamma so you will probably want to decrease it a bit in QLWF panel...

lets make an example
i have in the general kray render panel : exponential 2,2 e 2
in LWF panel gamma 2,2 e 2
the render with those setting is quite dark... to render more lighhened how i should change both setting ?

Don't change exposure in QLWF panel. Leave it at 1.0. With exponential in Kray gui the correct way would be to change tonemap to Exponential in QLWF also. But this currently produces black render because there is a bug. A workaround is to use gamma and lower parameter to around 1.6.
So for example -
Kray GUI: exponential 2.2
QLWF: gamma 1.6

In your case instead of having exposure 2 I would change it to 1 and make all lights 2x brighter...

with these setting the render is very dark ( i am using lumi ball , windows area light, sun and medium setting, photonmap)
besides it seems that if i double exposure value in kray gui the brightness doesnt increases lineary... i men 2 exposure value doesnt give a render 2 time brighter as i would expect

Here are some tests with your tips and tricks, i think i´m starting to pull out of the "plastic" look.
now I have to get my materials right, and i´ll never use gamma again, just exponensial.
