Tips for Animation...

Post by Oliver »

Hi there,

I rendered some simple animations with Krays GI blending which is great. Mostly static lighting, some 'moving sun' shots.

But. I now have to render some rather chaotic scenes (lots of stuff flying around, fast moving objects...). I would love to throw Kray at it - if all fails I can surely get results from using some simpler Light setups even without GI. Still, there is some time for testing. Can anyone recommend some parameters so that I get some smooth, unflickering GI as well as no too obvious delaying contact shadows? For example, I have a picture frame on the wall (17 to be more correct) that gets blown away. With my settings the shadow fades out slowly, looking odd, while the frame is long (maybe 20 frames) gone.
Maybe Kray is not ready to do that without some insane render times... I mean insane even in Krayland.

Sorry for the delay, I'm working on another project (primarily), I have to logout/login to check stuff.

Frames 10
Extinction 5

For this test (kray_04_web.mov) I just used the Medium preset.
The final lighting in this shot will of course look different, still the contact shadow problem will be there, as indicated best visible at the frame marked with the red circle.

The other clips are just for fun/testing animated lights.

PS: It would be great to to be able to use the override surfaces feature with some 'maintain X' abilities. So that one could 'maintain transparency' for example. Cause I save gray copies of my objects (leaving their transparency parameters in place) at the moment, since a clipmap is only scene dependant.

afaik transparency is retained when using surface override

If you set the frame interpolation to a lower value, like 5 perhaps, you should reduce the delay and it might still be enough to get a stable solution.

ive used timeinterpolation 2frames for this old anim http://www.kraytracing.com/animations/door.avi
If you run it in slowmotion you see that there is a slight delay when the light goes on.
