Okay, everyone, it's very simple.
There will be no demo before a final version is released.
It's not logical to do, it's not practical to do and I really can't think of a piece of software somewhat similar to kray that had a demo while it was still in beta.
DEMO??
I'm sorry, Acid, but I can't see a pre-release demo as either impractical or illogical, and simply saying it will not make it so. I, of course, have no access to KRay, so I can't know how useable it is. But most people here seem to agree that in its current state its already a superb and very usable renderer. If that is so, a demo could only help sales and encourage further development. I hope that you are wrong, and that a demo version is always in consideration; I believe it would be foolish to arbitrarily eliminate the possibility in such a fashion. But if you are right, then lets hope the final release isn't too far away. Best of luck to Gregorz and his testers regardless.
Releasing a demo needs development time which right now is better spent on developing kray...
Kray changes very often, there are a lot of half implemented features that don't work right now, but might tomorrow, or next week.
When is the right time to release a demo then? Should a lot of demos be released as kray improves, which would mean even more development time is needed? Would you give it another chance if you downloaded a demo today in which feature X only semi-worked?
A demo will be considered when kray is at a point where it works as it should.

forgive me if this has been metioned before but kray costs ?300 which means you get ur money back on one or two jobs, thats if you are charging your clients properly!! so why do people need a demo?? look at the gallery and see whats been made with kray...........??
i am sure that when the final version comes out it'll cost alot more anyways.

Ok, Well looks like I'm unable to post that 'sample scene' due to the client dissaproving & also the project size is really quite large and not suitable for this kind of experiment in any case. Nonetheless, thanks AcidArrow for offerring to put it through it's paces in Kray.
There have been some interesting points bought up in this thread but at the end of the day I've decided I wont be taking the plunge until I see a demo. If this means paying more for it thats perfectly fine by me and with Kray apparently in such a state of flux it is somewhat understandable why the author is reluctant to release a demo.
With LW 9.3 I'm getting good rendertimes & results using final gather for now (yes even interior shots) but if the Kray demo blows me away, no doubt you will have another customer.

Mmmmmm
First, excuse my english
There are some word that everyone uses when why talk about 3D programs, plugins and utilities. Those words are "like" and "prefer".
I prefer Lightwave as a pack for modeling and rendering, but for particles I prefer Softimage. For some model I like to use ZBrush... For rendering I use FPrime, but sometimes I prefer to use the native LW render engine... I hate some programs, plugins and utilities...
I don't know if I'll feel confortable with KRay. That's why I prefer a demo or a trial. I know that a demo or a trial needs extra work...
Mmm. No demo without Save or whatever? No bussines for me. I'm still working well without KRay. And I haven't a way to know if it will really be useful for me.

I agree with thatMrFurious wrote:With LW 9.3 I'm getting good rendertimes & results using final gather for now (yes even interior shots) but if the Kray demo blows me away, no doubt you will have another customer.
The importance of a Demo is certainly not lost on those who develop Kray.
But what should be remembered is that releasing a demo while the software is still in a beta stage can cause more harm than good for the reputation of a fairly young render which must compete with established software. The current Open Beta's and Internal beta's do not and will not fully reflect the finish product feature rich wise (some cool things on the way) and stability/ function wise.
It's great to see so many people eager to try Kray for themselves but unfortunately the decision has been made to only release a demo after the final product has shipped, hopefully everyone can remain patient for that day, I know if it was me I'd find it difficult
