Light exterior scene, interior details - how to?

Post by olahaldor »

I've started lighting an exterior scene, and I'm pretty much happy with that. I will present images for a lighting and texturing competition (no real prizes, only badges or icons on the forum.. and then there's the kick in the butt for those who use 3Ds Max to take a peak over the fence - the grass is greener on this side, eh? 8) ) and in one of the shots I'm placing the camera so that you can get a peak inside one of the buildings. See screenshot provided.

Even though I have Physky activated to light the exterior scene, the interior is dark and dull. I've thought about luma planes, but I'm struggling a little bit. Even though I check the "Unseen by camera", it still renders the plane itself. Any way to fix that, or are there other ways to make it look good, if not better ?

Hey that's great that you are going to show Kray to the world!

About your scene - obviously exposure is too low. Increase the physky exposure parameter or you can also increase exposure in Kray itselft. I like to do it in physky first though.

Problem then is that a lot of the scene will be blown out. What you see in the little render preview is in the shadow areas. I'll give it a go when I get back home though. :)

You have to think about it as a photographer... When taking photo in shadow area the sunny parts will of course be blown out. However you can also fix this by using exponential tonemapping blending and playing with photon power or sun intensity and such... You could also use fill lights or bounce cards like real photographers would.

I'm a photographer for video and stills along with a lot of other things I do, but it's all kind of different and hard to wrap my head around when I'm in a computer program. And I'm kind of thinking of the computer "come on stupid, do what I think!"

How do I go about hiding the luma cards? I check "unseen by camera" but it's still visible.

Unseen by camera hides them from camera view. Unseen by rays hides them from refraction and reflection rays. You have to turn both of them ON and also add this command to header or footer "lwo2unseenbyrays_affectsgi 0;" if you want them to hide them completely but still emmit light (in case of lumi polygons).
