I finally made the big step and bought it

Post by olahaldor »

Allrighty - new user, planning to spend the day at work getting into Kray. So far, so good. I'm impressed by the render times vs. quality.

However, I'm struggling quite a bit with anti aliasing. It's by far not as straight forward as LW's own render engine. I've gone through the manual, and it explains "this is that" but I'd like some practical examples maybe, to get a kick into the right direction. I've tried about all render methods, tweaked a few settings, and I've gotten somewhat near something, but not quite there.

I've seen in a few threads that someone said Kray will utilize all cores. Kray will utilize one core most of the time, and only for the anti aliasing process, all cores will get some action. Is that normal?

Hey and welcome aboard!

first about AA: I usually use FSAA (full screen antialiasing) and it is real easy to use. It's slower than adaptive but easy to setup and gives good quality. The only setting you worry is grid size (when using grid) or when using quasi random min/max rays. FSAA will antialias every pixel in the image with (grid size)^2 number of samples. So Grid 4 will use about 4^2=16 samples and so on...

About using cores: Kray uses all cores - if it's not then something must be wrong on your end. What are your system specifications?

I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro with two 4-core 2.8GHz XEON CPUs and I'm running LW 9.6 build 1539

I've been trying to figure out the anti aliasing while waiting for a reply here now, and occasionally when I click the Render frame button I'm presented an error message which reads something about "Cannot find common\KrayLicenseTool.lsc" and then LW crashes.

I'll give it a shot with FSAA.

Edit
Still having trouble with this. Not the AA now, that worked out quite good. Is it a known bug that I cannot use Nodes window when Kray options panel is open? After I've been into the nodes window to adjust and tweak a little bit I can't render, because I get a small box saying "Kray unlock code is invalid". I have no idea what's going on. :(

Edit again
More trouble ahead. LW crashed again, and when I want to open KrayOptions I got this error:

Hello,
sounds to me you have some corrupted config files. Can you join Kray Skype Public chat and I can try to help you there?

cheers,

Nice to see yeah here. Ask questions and search the boards, this is a helpful group here. Also, check out Jure's video tuts from the main site, it'll help you get started understanding Kray.
