Check the image bellow to see how irradiance should look like. It should be very smooth because otherwise the FG will not be able to get rid of the splotches.
To get nice smooth irradiance do not use too many photons, otherwise you'll have problems smoothing them. Usually a 100-500.000 will be enough. Use N number as high as needed to smooth them out (probably N=1000 and above).
