Nice plugin. I think this is only a couple of script applying Hd instance tecnology with variables to control all system.
With kray instance and a good programing couple of seeting we can do something similar.
I.e:
1.- Kray instance applied with different grass model (on request)
2.- Controls to change each model variation, color, etc... and presets of vertex map to control density, cutoff, etc
3.- Deformer control to modify the model geometry (blend factor, twist, etc)
All applied in 1 plugin.

Saw that in newtek forum. A bit pricey though for grass. I think vue can do grass.
This is something newtek needs

nice, but personally i find it quite irritating: Kray community and b-testers are asking for some attention from Happy Digital for a while.
I think this is an answer.

He means we asked Happy digital for support for Kray Instances but they didn't reply.

I think he means their answer is to develop something for Vray, maybe a bigger market for them...

Developing something for Kray doesn't have to be to the exclusion of Vray. Come on HD, where's the Kray love?

kray renders hdi volumetrics exactly as the hdi setting. is it possible to have other volumetric effects or pixel filter in kray like sas? that would be great for grass.

.. or perhaps it has become clear that CORE will come standard with a comprehensive render intancing solution, which is what we all expect. Perhaps they are just looking to new markets to fill the gap ..

PS. Great work on your site, Khan! Is that Thalys spot all LW?

Thanks Geo, Yes, Thalys was all LW, we were 2 people doing all the 3D work, and it took about 1,5 months to achieve it. It was exhausting, Transmotion and POI Cam saved our lives to multiply elements in post process. A little renderfarm too (+Butterfly render) The sewing shot was really hard to achieve and the final one too.
I will post on Spinquad and CG Society and maybe NT forum to explain and share.

Just a quick update on this topic after Pavlov asked Graham Fyffe (dev. of HDI) about working with Kray. Graham's answer:
"There was some talk about that a while ago. It is possible with HDI 1.8, but the issue would be with HDI 2.0, which generates instances on the fly instead of at the beginning of the render. So even if you only have position, rotation and scale for say 100 billion instances, you'll still need several terabytes of RAM just to store all that.
There was more recent talk of having KRay be able to use HDI as a volumetric plugin somehow... That might be more realistic."

On a side, but related note, check out what Hieron on the NT forums did with HDI and grass (approx. 7.5 minutes per frame for 720p):
