rendering GI pass at 1/2 resolution

Post by _mats_ »

Hi everyone,

Another animation related question, I am rendering a GI pass for an animation stepping every 20 frames.

My question is, is it OK to render the GI file at 1/2 the resolution? (in order to speed up this step), or will it look too bad? - I have seen this method used for stills, but are there any implications with animations?

Thanks !

GI is resolution independent (AFAIK) so it shouldn't be a problem. I've done this in the past and have not had an issue.

..just pushing it here..

will rendering the GI at 1/4 of the resolution work also?? or 1/8 ??

(just trying to speed up this step as much as possible)

would be REALLY neat if a future release will be able to tackle this automatically (just hit render anim in walkthrough mode "a la Modo") would be awesome, is that planned?

thanks !

Hi Mat,

I don't think you will have a problem with a lower resolution, the GI should be the same, I've tried 1/4 res and did not notice a difference.

If your after a one pass method with Kray you can always try "savegimode 1;"

The 2 pass method doesn't give me that much (speed) advantage over the one pass method (10-20%). And if I consider the fact that the one pass method required less 'hassle' (two-pass=changing settings back and forth-deleting rendered files etc) and produces a more correct lightsolution I think I'm gonna stick with the one pass method.

But right now I realize that maybe my scenes aren't really suited to compare the two methods...
