No, it's quite easy- can be done LW <=9.2 compatible way using custom object added to each Null, or LW >= v9.3 way using Layout master Gizmos..
Although when there would be hi-poly mesh, or many nulls, it would be slowing down Layout viewports..

Yup, there's a plugin called CustomNull (search Flay for it) that will allow you to visualise your instantiated objects after you've replaced them with nulls. Slows down screen refresh enormously though.

instancing question

after making an instance and when you modify or make some changes on the main object, does all the instance or cloned ones changes accordingly?

domingo, yes.. all the changes are propagated instantly at render time
