Final System recommendation.

Postby ZodiaQ » Tue Jun 04, 2019 1:45 pm

This week my new machine needs to be ordered but I'm still not sure to go for :
- AMD Threadripper 2990WX (64 threads)
- Intel i9-9980XE (36 threads)
- Intel dual Xeon 4216 (64 threads)
Kray benchmark don't show many recent results.

I know Janusz will say dual Xeon but I have a slight preference for the Threadripper as it seems to come out very well in what I've read till now but I'm not sure.
Especially since I see the i9 higher than the Threadripper and even the dual Xeon in benchmark?

Prices of total system aren't that far apart.
Any advise?

Be careful with AMD. There is some incompatibility with Windows which affect Idle Cores. Please read this on the web.
We got two machines with best AMD CPU and they work on half speed with Lightwave and Kray. I do not know when Microsoft will solve this situation by patch (there is some problem with recognizing cores which affect random max CPU speed)
Personally I would by top i9 CPU, why? because is only one CPU and as we know Dual CPU system (Xeon) has always problems - is not easy split task between two physical CPUs. Also motherboards are cheap.
I point right now to Top shelf I9 CPU.
Right now AMD is still risky.

So these are the options :

PCSPECIALIST - Uw INTEL configuratie.pdf
(227.81 KiB) Downloaded 18 times

PCSPECIALIST - Uw i9 configuratie.pdf
(183.45 KiB) Downloaded 21 times

PCSPECIALIST - Uw AMD configuratie.pdf
(228.22 KiB) Downloaded 18 times

Was almost sure I would go for AMD but now think i9 9980XE will probably be better choice.
Prices for i9 and AMD are almost the same, dual Xeon is a bit more expensive.

BTW did you already try this https://www.extremetech.com/computing/283114-new-utility-can-double-amd-threadripper-2990wx-performance coreprio utility on the AMD cpu?
As this might solve the problem of Windows spending all of its time trying to shuffle instructions across the cores

I talked with my friend who has new AMD and use LW and also Kray.
Situation is that:
- LW2015 not working at full speed, it will be no patch for that from Newtek so LW15 does not support new AMD and also K2 (this is not connected)
- LW2018-19 is ok , K3 he did not test yet. But is no worry about K3 and new AMD. I know K3 Benchamrk is not working at full speed but this is because K3 benchmark contain old version of K3 core. I will talk about it with G.

There is one more idea for you.
Download K3 Benchmark wait for finish test or press Ctrl+c to stop benchmark and use command line to quadruple resolution (to make longer passes phases)
In command line is info how to do when you stop test.

Thanks for reply.
Biggest problem of course is I cannot test system I do not have yet.
Question also is how big is speed loss with AMD right now on LW, is it <25% average or more?
To be on safe side maybe the i9-9980XE is best choice right now. Although it's hard not to go for the 64TH AMD 2990WX as it's everywhere on the top of all the benchmarks.
And btw you changed your mind as you always recommended dual xenon all these years? :D

Lose speed render is around 15-20% comparing to nominal speed. So slightly you are slower than Dual Xeon.
I recommended Dual Xeon because was nothing to compare...but since AMD start messing with market and Intel starts be "angry" situation changed.
In this moment seriously I do not know what to choose....
Probably I would choose i9: watch top of Kray benchmark list. But this CPU also is not cheap.

Price difference is about €200-300 so not that much..
(AMD 2990Wx vs Intel i9-9980XE)

Personally I would choose i9....I do know but I do not trust AMD (this is becasue in past tense I bought AMD CPU 3D Now!...many years ago which was for me big dissipated and I just get affection to AMD, similar story is with Radeon GPU)

Maybe it will be i9 after all. Maybe in some situations a bit slower than AMD but without any windows problems. Anyway it will be blazing fast compared to what I have now :D . And LW 2015(11) will not be a problem as I don't think I will migrate to 2019 any time soon.

I see on bug tracker that G. fixed a lot LW19 bugs...so soon next update!

Not migrating because of the incompatibly of objects, not so much because of Kray not being ready :D
I am really not sure how to handle that in a decent way. To be sure one would have to backup all object libs, which is really massive amount of data.
I have to be able to make changes to existing projects build in LW 11.6.3 without objects from those scenes being overwritten by LW 2019.
I think it's really a challenge to keep things separated correctly.
On the other hand I haven't had time to look into the new surface structure of 2019 or that whole PBR stuff.

LW19...only one way direction. But we are not ready yet. New shader system in LW19 is fantastic and we do everything to be with K3 there...actually now developing is only to LW19 direction. When we finish support new system shader in LW19 G. will continue also adding next shaders in Kray Core.

Order is out, FINALLY! took almost 2 years

- Intel Core i9-9980XE 3 GHz 18-core 36 threads
- 128 GB ValueRAM DDR4
- Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060

Hopefully fast enough to work for a few more years with K3.
At least it will be faster than my ancient single Intel Xeon E5-1620
