My stab a kray exterior

Post by vpii »

Had a few hours today to kill, so thought I would give it a try. Fprime version and Kray. needs alot of work but just simple scene to test shading, no landscape.

They look pretty comparable in quality, what where the render times of each? Did you notice a big difference?

Fprime seemed faster, I stopped the render around 8 min. I am sure expert Kray users could render faster. I was just using high preset.

Hi, thanks nothing special. just using frontend projection of a grass image on a flat poly for the ground. Best thing to do is go to your nearest park and take some images of wide open grass. Then use on your images.

I'm sure some of the experts in Kray could get it faster too, but I really think exteriors wise (not over Kray) FPrime still shines. For speed and quality, it's a great bang for your buck. I know guys like Johny & Pheidian have been working hard on master exteriors on Kray, so it'll be interesting to see what eventually comes from that.

i still stick to frime for stills. I can not get colors ever right in Kray. I use G2 plugin heavy so Kray makes it hard for me sometimes. I did use Kray for a good sized animation of an exterior and the instance of trees and shurbs worked great. What I am disipointed in is the lack of support for moving items, cars etc. They say maybe soon.

why are you using the way old 6.5 OB? Trouble is the presets need an update, high settings use too heavy AA and most of the settings in there are ok for interiors but overkill for exteriorwork.

Switch from photonmapping to pathtracing. Use uncached with linear tonemapping and enter the same multiplier in second tab as you put in fprime master ( so 180% would be 1.8 ) to get equal results, (apart from the tweaks in G2). Use indirect lights in quality tab and keep bounces 1-4.

Enter a max FG value of 800 to start with.

cheers

ric

btw find the save passes option in kray indispensable, kray just has some stability issues and quirks (instances made it crash today and made me very unhappy) so sometimes i end up using trusty frprime to save the day ;)

darickster, I am using 64bit and when the last beta I was getting alot of render trouble with the last release. I went back one version and it seems to be more stable for me. I have not installed yet the last beta from a week ago. I hope it runs more smooth.

for fast render you can use precomputed filtered in exteriors with raytraced direct, i render at speeds near 1 minute at 800x600 its lightning fast and renders blurry reflections much faster than fprime.

with latest OB we get more nodesupport, i just dont run it in production environment yet.
