Kray has been in development for years now yet nothing in the way of a demo since 1.6... why not release a demo for those of us interested but not quite 100% convinced??

You can do it two ways:
Develop a software and release it with some kind of demo when it's done OR release Open Betas and give the customers a way to influence development while it is developing. We carefully listens to all suggestions and do our best to fulfill as many requests as possible.
We have chosen the later alternative and will not release anymore demos until it is done. The 1.612 demo we released hurt us more than not releasing a demo at all. Since people expected everything to work like in Lightwave, click render and get an image, and when it didnt they start complaining instead and telling how "bad" and "difficult" kray was. We NEED to get feedback and idea's from users of how to improve things so we can make it the fastest and most complete renderengine there is for Lightwave.

Most software released as beta is ALSO released as a demo & I see no reason why Kray couldn't follow suit. Personally the 1.6 demo fired up some enthuiasm in me, and from the looks of the kray threads on many forum threads especially on newteks site, I'm not the only one excited about this project. So in that regard it seems that the 1.6 demo did it's job for the most part and could only have HELPED rather than hurt. Yet we still wait.... As for those nay-sayers, well they're always going to be there no matter what you do.

AFAIK most if not all software has trial or demo versions after their beta is over and the final product is released.

But anyways there's just so much things that have priority right now, and we want to make sure that our customers get the best software possible.

So demo versions will just have to wait a bit..

um, maxwell, infigo & fry...all had betas and demos available to my knowlendge & are just 3 that come to mind immediately, and this is just in the realm of LW render engines...

That's not true. Fry didn't have a demo until version 1.7 went beta. And even then it took 3 weeks to release a demo. All OB's were only accessable to payed users.

Same goes here for Kray. I've got a kraylicense and i can only say i agree on their workflow.

I've got to say that i've seen multiple requests for an illegal version of kray on different forums. Sensei has a nice workflow for encountering simple spreading of his easysplineplugin. Ofcourse this can be hacked, but not easily spreaded, and if spreaded an original version it's tracable. For Kray is will be harder to do this since they allow you to use it on 5 pc's, so it can't be hooked to a single dongle only.

BTW fprime has no demo either!!!

If you don't believe in this product already. And you don't have a project you can book these costs away on, then you'll might have to wait another year for a demo. So be it.

If you use lightwave for your proffession. It might be a risk of buying this plugin. But then again, the costs are low, the general idea is well know (GI like Vray), and there are lots of examples of what it can do.
Like other investments, taking a risk can give you great benifits. Same applies here. Spent 1200 sloties and gain a very good and fast GI-renderer.

Fry 1.7 BETA did you say?? Beta, Open Beta...its all the same to me, the end user. Didn't mention fprime so why go there. 3 weeks to release a fry demo: wow how did you ever pass the time, must have been agony. Your ramblings about cracked software is interesting but I fail to see any relevance to my OP.

Obviously you have taken the plunge & invested in Kray. Good on you. But I only buy something if I have personally had a chance to see what I can do with it. This is not confined to software either. Sure there are examples of what OTHERS are doing with the software, but then again I've seen some amazing work done with Poser & um, well.. its POSER!! So while some of you pros might be getting those 'wow-factor' renders, I'm still not convinced until I can see what I myself am able to achieve with it.

So maybe I'll have to wait another year. It's a pity because 1.6 was like the sweetheart who kept you at 1st base for a year. What a tease.

Maxwell didn't have a demo before the final 1.0 version was released. I believe fry didn't have a demo until recently as well.

And indigo, well.. it's a free renderer, it never had a demo and it never will, no need...

Acid- are you sure about the Maxwell V1.0 because I'm sure I saw a pre 1.o version being used at work..?

There was no demo of Maxwell released before 1.0 went final.

Well, by someone that was on beta maybe? There were a lot of betas and release candidates of maxwell, but were for customers only, pretty much like kray.

Once they released, then they made a demo available that had watermarks and limited resolution to 800x600. I'm not aware if maxwell had any special preview pre-release versions for big companies, but even if they did, that hardly counts as a public demo.

Just a tip, price will go up after release(so they said in the past anyway). So if you're so into kray why not get it?
