Animation questions

Hello,

I've been reading now for some time on the forum and I'm trying a animation with KRAY.

I do have some questions:

LIGHTMAP/TONEMAP:
I understand the principle behind Lightmap/Photonmap. Can I use Lightmap for a animation without flickering?
Which is better? My Lightmap render test are almost always looking better than my Photonmap renderings.
Is there a "best" way for rendering a animation?
Can both solutions

CAMERA:
- What kind of camera do you guys use for animation (architecture)?
The Shift camera is nice for stills, but I don't think it is real for animations.

GI SOLUTION BAKING:
I do understand the process of baking/saving the GI file. Is there a setting that works best for interior animations (frame stepping, AA settings, etc.)

Thanks for your help

Ante

You can both solutions. Read Wiki Kray PLEASE..there is explanation what is difference between Lightmap/Photonmap.
Flickering which you receive is not because you use Lightmap/Photonmap, this is just difference way of travelling photons. Problem is with setup in general tap with sharing GI. For animation you MUST shot photons only once before final gathering.
So just select SHARED FOR ALL FRAMES (general tab) select place for GI kraydata, select UPDATE and start render. That `s it!

All cameras are good, all depends what you wont. But with shift camera you must be careful , don`t use high value BITCH and BANK in rotation

Full screen AA is the best solution for animation , minimum Grid4

Hello Janusz,

thanks a lot for your replies. I usually get better results with Lightmaps (and most demo scenes fromt the Kray depo are Lightmap scenes). I just wanted to know if it is faster to use Photonmapping instead of Lightmapping in an animation context.

I understand that I have to bake the global illumination data once and then reuse it. I want to try out the network rendering option so I need to bake the whole GI solution with a stepping of 10-25 frames (update option) and later for the final network rendering click on "LOAD". Correct?

Thanks a lot for your help.

best regards

Ante

It's not that one would be faster than other. They are very different methods of shooting photons and for animations Lightmap tends to work better because it will shoot photons where camera needs them and not waste them in other places.

Yes that is correct 10-25 should be fine for slow camera movements as is the case in interior shots.

Hi guys,

I'm trying some test renders and I'm running into the same problem.

I rendered a short test animation WITHOUT baking before (Shared frames, update solution) but my render times are getting insane (first frame 6 minutes, 22nd frame 32 minutes). I remember reading somewhere about it, but can't find the answer to the problem. What am I doing wrong?

Best regards

Is your "Passes" setting on FG tab >1? That's likely the problem. It must be 1 for shared GI.
