Fry Swap - interesting feature

Fry Render has released a companion package called Fry Swap:

"fryrender SWAP is a revolutionary product based on our proprietary physically-based render technology. Sharing a base concept similar to fryrender's Layer-Blending: "render once and get as many images as you need", SWAP enables you to change materials in your scene while keeping the photorealistic quality of your original image, in real-time."

if you read a bit inside their forums you will find many limitations of this new technique.

for example, more than one rendering is required to make this technique work...

from the fry forum: "As explained in the manual, in this version (1.0) you can only swap -one- object simultaneously.

We have planned to let the user change more than one (any number of) objects in the next version, which most likely we will release pretty soon.

Regarding the computational overhead -> The computation time will be linearly proportional to the number of objects swappable. So, if you want to swap 2 objects -> the render time will be twice as long. Swap produces conventional fry scenes, so their render times are similar to any other fry scene, yes."

also, no transparency support and i'm pretty sure, no SSS...

apart of UV remapping, most of the functionality can be already done in PS with the use of ID masks.

all this for just 495 EUR! ;)

I think this is very interesting feature even with the limitations. It can probably also be achieved with some clever compositing but that is much more complex.

Anyways this kind of things can only be done in brute force renderers which calculate GI for every pixel. Kray with it's FG interpolation method could not do such things - but you get plenty of renders in the same time though. ;)

If you render out an UV buffer (color image with a RGB vlaue representing the XYZ coordinates of the pixel), you could also replace imagemaps in a compositor like Fusion.
