About SAVE/LOAD/UPDATE modes: yes I admit it is confusing. Here is how they work:

SAVE mode will render frame and save the solution to GI file, then move to next frame and save again. Notice that there is no loading on each frame - this means that only GI data from ONE frame will be saved.
LOAD mode will load data at the begining of rendering and use it to render frame, on finished render it will not save it back to file!
UPDATE mode will load data on start and on finish save data back to file (LOAD + SAVE). So this is the mode you want to use when baking GI.
