Shader Simulator v2

Post by Janusz Biela »

Soon K3 update and I release my Shader Simulator v2. It is more serious scene which contain everything what can "stress" render engine.
- multi LEM light sources
- transparency
- refraction
- refraction blur
- reflection blur
- multi reflection surfaces

Scene contain my best settings in K3RC3 and K2 and also near possible quality effect.
Do not try it in native LW render engine

Good comparison promity. Very good time/quality for Octane. We started to use Octane for all our renders.
I hope there will be some upgrade of Kray soon. There is a chance to use it for interiors. But when I see the time for Octane I am not sure.

To compare this you must:
- make same noise level on transparency surfaces - this is important.
- 10 bounce lights
...and please give me these two GPU specifications.

...so I did Octane simulation (a bit more noise + 4 bounce light - I think you do not have more)

GPU is two 980Ti.
As for bounce light - I can not even imagine where this is done.
Transparecy (max glossy depth in Octane terminology) - 12.
Diffuse Depth (analog bounce light?) - was 4 and in new render is 10.

By the way - I personally like much more K3 render.
I just think that if you add the possibility of rendering to the GPU, there would be no equal for K3. )

Thanks for testing. This scene is very interesting because contain deep recurse problem and shows noise balance from Engine.
For example in Octane noise balance is not equal for transparency and reflection blur: reflection blur on the ceiling comparing to the transparency noise in glass.
In K3RC3 we have special part of core which reduce unbalanced noise effect. This affect time render, without still you have to wait for clean glass when ceiling reflection blur is neat.

Anyway comparing CPU/GPU has no sense. Also in K3 Photon Map is interpolated (no brute force), sampling GI is simple QMC so not that advanced like in Octane.
But like you see Global Illumination is the same

I personally prefer also KRay. The problem is that KRay 3 is still only RC version with many limitations and stability issues.
GPU rendering is getting cheaper with new cards. Customers ask mainly for fast project delivery and not perfect/accurate quality.
Thanks for great test scene.

There is one problem with GPU now: availability. Too many companies try dig virtual money. The situation is very bad.
We finish soon VCM and we start shader system + real time post processing. You will get same effect quality like Corona or Fstorm in few minutes.

Totally off-topic for this post, but I do wonder what will happen to CoronaRender and V-Ray, now that ChaosGroup owns both!

Sure there will be synergy by merging the two dev-teams and intellectual property, but it hardly makes sense to keep on developing both render engines in parallel.Exciting times! :D

Off topic, but good to mention. I like Corona render for the quality it's producing and also because the development team is from the Czech Republic same as myself.
All these "small" development teams can make great products, but when bought by big companies future is unclear.
I hope KRay 3 with all its great futures will be available soon so we can buy licences and support KRay developer.

I wonder if Gregor would sell Kray to ChaosGroup?
