First, tweak your photon map.

Switch to Photon estimate/precomputed mode. Feel free to turn off anti-aliasing for this, it won't really do any good.

Set the N value on the photon tab to 1500 or so, and the number of photons to maybe half a million (recieved).

Turn on "use global autophotons" for the global illumination scale.

Render, and post the image. What's the cell count?

Is that with an N value of 1500?

The N value controls how many photon "hits" that are considered to create the cells you see in that image. The higher the N value, the fewer cells there will be and the smoother they will be. So turn up the N value to 6000 and try again.

Also, how many photons are you using right now?

If you set the Global map mode to Photonmap, photons will be fired from lights and into the scene. If you set it to Lightmap, photons will be fired from the camera into the scene. Generally, I recomend using Lightmap.

If you set the Global photons mode to Emitted, photons will be fired until it reaches the number you set. For example, if you set it to 100000 emitted photons, it will fire 100000 photons. This can result in less hits or more hits, depending on your scene. If you set it to Recieved, it will fire photons until it reaches the number of hits you selected. Recieved mode is generally recomended.
