Surface Library - SRZ import/export for easy sharing

Postby tajino » Sat Jul 07, 2007 1:30 pm

Hi, it has been a dread in LW to share surfaces .srf file which usually has related image maps, sharing srf without the images needed is useless most of the time.

So, recently, i took some time to create this Surface Library plugin for modeler. It has functions to archive .srf and related images into a compressed .zip file with .srz extension. Simply share this .srz, and others can import and extract it into their library with the import function.

Besides, when applying the preset, it will automatically copy the related images from the source library path into your current content folder. and apply it straight away onto the selected polygons.

the plugin utilizes stand-alone zip.exe and unzip.exe to the compression, only works on win32 at the moment.

Here it is,

now we can start sharing our surface presets with image maps. :)

did you manage to get it to work?

otherwise please check here
http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68153 , it is slightly sensitive at selecting the correct custom path at first due to the fact that lscript lacks folder picking requester. which is why i got to do with this workaround method.

Tajino, would it be possible to create this plugin for layout too?

yes, it is in my to do list, but there is little advantage in layout as you can't apply the preset directly to selected poly, as there are no poly selection in layout. and futhermore there is no way to get user selected surface in surface editor in layout, except to do a lousy hack.

maybe we can all get together and send mass feature request to NT at lw-features@newtek.com, for better lscript to
- get current selected surface in surface editor,
- current selected image in image editor,
- faster binary file I/O and
- let external threaded plugin like fPrime to issue commandinput into layout, (that will enable fprime to be used as a interactive surface picker)

Ok I'll do that.

Btw. I've moved my surface presets from LW folder to a library location and now it seems I cannot use them with the plugin. I'm using LW's "Path options" for preset folder. If I try to select them by hand then it gives me error "subfolder surfaces doesn't exist". If I use "LW Preset Path" in you plugin it doesn't show the presets.

The plugin doesn't seem to recognize custom path. Can you check this please?

How does your current preset path look like?

is it ..\Presets\Surface Editor\Surface Preset, which does not reside in LW program folder?

If that is the case, the plugin will not be able to find it. At the moment if custom path is selected, it rely on the preset parent path which has to be named "Surfaces", and in this folder then contains all the subfolders that contains .srf

I'll look into that, maybe have options for the base search path.

Yes that's how it looks. I changed the path in LW "Paths options" and LW preset panel sees them fine.
There has been some new things about presets added in OB9 so maybe you should check into that too.

ok, do you also have a images folder in your library root folder? like this...

Library-root\Images\..
Library-root\Presets\Surface Editor\Surface Preset\..
Library-root\Objects\..
Library-root\Scenes\..

?

will check that.

Is there a library of Kray materials somewhere? If not, can we start a forum for this? I know certain things are setup differently for Kray...
